Are Special Teams Important?

Are special teams important? Not so much if you listen to Pulaski Academy Bruins Coach Kevin Kelley, who reports that he stopped punting in 2005 — after reading an academic study on the statistical consequences of going for the first down versus handing possession to the other team, plus reading Tuesday Morning Quarterback’s relentless examples of when punting backfires, but going for the first down works.

Pulaski hasn't punted since 2007 when it did so as a gesture of sportsmanship in a lopsided game. This article from Sports Illustrated tells about the philosophy of the Bruins head coach.

Weather Update

Rain finally starting to move away from the Houston area as Katy gets set to take on Bellevue, Washington, while there has been a steady rain all day at Pennington Field in Bedford, where Euless Trinity will take on Cedar Hill at 7:30 in a matchup of class 5A #1 and 2 (AP). The good news is there is little lightning with this rain, which should allow the games to be played.

Shead Loses Ground

Cayuga's game against Dawson was cancelled in the second quarter last night with the Wildcats leading 20-0. Running back Traylon Shead, who is in pursuit of Kenneth Hall's national career rushing record had over 100 yards in the first quarter, but it was all wiped out by severe thunderstorms, leading to cancellation of the game. Shead has 459 yards and 5 TDs on the season and stays at 8,055 for his career.

Grand Prairie Forfeits to Arlington High

In an unusual move, Grand Prairie conceded to Arlington in a forfeit 2-0 due to the weather. The game would have been replayed today, but Gopher coach Gary Bartel stated half the kids on his team work and he didn't feel that he wanted to play with a large number of players missing.

Young is off to a torrid start with 1,167 yards and 20 TD passes in his first three games.

Rare 1-2 Matchup Coming in Class 5A

Week One Musings

The class 5A Katy Tigers, who were ranked #1 by some pollsters last week, lost to The Woodlands 31-27, but they're actually in better position this year than last. They turned the tables on Galena Park North Shore in the season's first game, edging them 9-7, after losing to them 10-6 in 08'. In 2008 The Woodlands embarrassed the Tigers 47-0 before Katy went on to win a second consecutive state title.

A couple games involving top ten teams crossing class lines this week when class 4A Wolfforth Frenship meets class 3A Abilene Wylie and class 2A Arp takes on class 1A Alto. Expect the upper classes to teach the junior classes a lesson in each contest.

Weather has caused numerous cancellations the first two weeks of the season and it looks like the forecast again calls for thunderstorms to rumble across the state this weekend.
