The improbable happened Friday night when Plano beat Jesuit 20-12, routing the fourth largest high school in Texas to Division II for the Class 5A playoffs.
The 9-1 Allen Eagles join 9-0 Abilene, 10-0 Cedar Hill, 9-1 Southlake Carroll and 10-0 El Paso Coronado in Class 5A Division II Region I to make up what is undoubtedly the toughest region in all of the state.
Two Central Texas traditional football powers failed to qualify for the playoffs this year as Class 5A Smithson Valley and Class 3A Liberty Hill were shuffled to the sidelines.
Big turn around for Class 2A Malakoff this season as they beat Kerens 23-16 to qualify as the Division I representative from District 14-2A. Malakoff was 0-10 last season and 1-19 over the past two seasons.
In Class 4A, get ready for Indian fever as the Port Neches-Groves Indians finished 10-0 after an improbable overtime win over Beaumont Central, 25-22. It is the first unblemished regular season for the Indians since 1977 when they made it all the way to the state championship before losing to Plano 13-10 in a game that ranks as the highest attended playoff game in Texas High School football history.
